How bad do you want to shoot films with an iPhone?

I got caught up in the current trend towards trying to use the iPhone (or iPad) camera for cinematography, so I thought to give this a try.
The billet construction gives a nice form factor to the iPhone, the extension lens shoots decent quality wide-angle footage, and the cold-shoe bracket and abundant 1/4"-20 threads make it easy to add accessories like lights, mics, grips, or a tripod.
The biggest omission in design is not making an allowance for the iPhone shut-off/lock button. There isn't one, and it's a major flaw. Once you start shooting, you either have to wait for the camera to auto-shut off, or purchase an app to shut the phone off from the screen. This is odd, as ALM has built in access to all of the other iPhone control points in the aluminum camera housing. It can be assumed that this was a cost decision, as to implement a phone shutoff mechanism would likely involve building a spring-loaded extension into the billet.
The microphone is no real improvement over the iPhone's built-in mic, and the mini-jack can create a lot of static if the boom is accidentally touched during shooting.

iPhone/iPad filmmaking is currently a huge fad garnering a lot of attention. One filmmaker has reportedly shot an entire film using an iPhone. The question is, with all of the modifications, additions, and structural improvements needed to glean every last drop of quality out of the iPhone's 1080p, h.264 video, is it really worth using over a video camera or DSLR, just to have the bragging rights?
I don't think so...
